When will my family of squirrels next have their babies?

ok, i have a family of squirrels living in my attic, and the mother just had some babies. they fit in the palm of my hand and their eyes were open. I saw these babies again on june 23rd in my porch and they were full grown and jumping from rafter to rafter, very coordinated. I know that squirrels lots of times have a second litterin a year, when would this mother squirrel have her next litter? and at what age do baby squirrels open their eyes?

please don't tell be to get rid of the squirrels in my attic, i already know the damage they do but i will not hurt them

thanks a lotWhen will my family of squirrels next have their babies?
Baby squirrels don't open their eyes until 4-5 weeks old. The first litter is in Spring (March-April), the second litter is in the summer (June-July). So your squirrels already had two litters.

OK MY SQUIRRELS LIVE IN MY GAZEBO AND THE FIRST SET WAS A MOTHER AND BABIES AND COST NEARLY $200 TO REMOVE...?

Why did you pay the first time were they being destructive? Try some mothballs , or a cat, wait until they are grown and get a paintball gun, block their entrance., pressure washer.OK MY SQUIRRELS LIVE IN MY GAZEBO AND THE FIRST SET WAS A MOTHER AND BABIES AND COST NEARLY $200 TO REMOVE...?

Red and gray Squirrels can they mix? have babies?

have they ever mixed? (had a baby) I wonder what the outcome would be. is it like mixing a donkey and a horse?

my neighbor always shoots the red squirrels when they are on his property because he feeds the gray ones. (hes really old and kind of crazy) I personally think its mean and animal cruelty but you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Anyway I hear the gray squires are chasing the red ones away.. why can't they just live at peace with each other?

its like a metaphor for life..

lol help me I'm confused.Red and gray Squirrels can they mix? have babies?
No they can't reproduce. I suppose they could do the mating ritual but it would be in vain. In North America only one subspecies of Red squirrel is on the endangered list. In the Old World the greys are pressing hard upon their smaller reds. Here in North America the Red squirrel is larger than the gray. However, the smaller more aggressive grey runs the Larger Red out just like in Europe. I had heard, but never witnessed a persistent rumor that the grey castrates the Red. Thereby reducing their reproductive potential. To lend credence to the story I know female rabbits will bite off the male rabbits genitals at times leaving them with no penis or no testicles or without both structures. Over most of its range the Red is legal game. Over its range the gray is legal game. Cities etc. excepted. I'm sure someone has caged the two species at birth and tried to interbreed them. I have never heard of success. They aren't as closely related as a horse and donkey. With gene splicing, I'm sure in the near future somebody will succeed. Your neighbor that is shooting the Reds may well be eating them? The old man may just be hungry.Red and gray Squirrels can they mix? have babies?
You should call the authorities on your neighbor. It is illegal to shoot at the red squirrel. If anything can teach an old dog a new trick, a fine, or jail time, can.

Grey squirrels are more aggressive than Red squirrels, and they are separate species so no, they can not interbreed. Basically, they are two separate animals one native, and one not native, that are trying to fill in the same niche, and with no natural predators in the area, the foreign species will normally win, thus pushing the whole local food chain, off balance. Your neighbor is helping this to happen by feeding the grey squirrels..
In the UK the more agressive grey squirrels have almost replaced the indiginous red squirrels now.

No they dont and cant mate they are seperate species.

Your right species often cant live with each other without fighting often just like humans with seperate beliefs.

But there are some great stories and brilliant footage on you tube that proves different species can get on.
not sure if you are serious but red squirrels are protected and if he is shooting them he could find himself in serious trouble.

grey squirrels are vermin and not native to the UK and are making our native red squirrels an endangered species.

im not sure why they are pucshing out the red squirrels but sure the RSPCA could give you further advice.
I don't think they breed together. Grey ones often have red patches and people think they are a cross-breed but they aren't. The greys are bigger, have more babies and eat a wider variety of food. they simply out compete our native red. You should report your neighbour as the red is a protected species.
Since they are closely related, it could be possible, but then again, they evolved on seperate continents, so perhaps not. Besides, the characters of the two are very different- grays are boisterous and aggressive, and the reds are shy and reclusive.
Hi i dont think you mix the red %26amp; greys together because i have heard (that im not sure which way round it is ?) that 1 of the species of squirrel carry a disease which kills the other 1's off
i think thats illegal, isnt the red ones like endangered?

and anyway he should be shooting them grey yankees!

idk but black ones exist and they run out the grey ones, because they're hornier and they take the grey females.
Judging by your use of American English, you are in the USA or Canada? The situation over there is very different from the one in the UK.

The common red squirrel species in north America, the American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is completely unrelated to the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) found in Europe. Your neighbour may be entitled to shoot the American red squirrel, as they are not endangered in the majority of their range, but you'd need to check up your local wildlife regulations. They still wouldn't interbreed with the grays, as they are unrelated species (a sterile hybrid may be possible but would be very unlikely).

In North America, the American red squirrel evolved side-by-side with the many species of gray, flying and ground squirrels and the different species compete for resources but can coexist quite comfortably without any one species outcompeting another.

In the UK, however, there are no endemic gray squirrels; in fact there is only one endemic squirrel species, and that's our native red. One of your American gray squirrel species, specifically the Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) was artificially introduced into parks in the early 20th century, where it rapidly spread to the woodlands across England and Wales.

The grey squirrels outcompete the red somewhat for resources, but the main problem is a virus claled parapoxvirus, that is carried by the greys and is harmless to them, but is deadly to the eurasian reds.

The red squirrel population in England and Wales has been devastated, with only isolated populations left on grey free offshore islands and scattered traces in reserves.

The last stronghold is the pine forests of Scotland, where a mustelid (weasel-like) squirrel predator called the pine marten may be helping save the red squirrel by selectively controlling the grey population, where the two species meet

Squirrels are the most active in late winter, when the mating season begins. The period of gestation varies from 33 days , up to 60 days.A second litter can occur in mid summer, if there is an adequate food supply. They are born in the early spring. A female squirrel will choose the strongest male during mating season, but is unlikely to breed with that male again. They do not have hair or teeth, and are virtually blind for the first six to eight weeks. When will my family of squirrels next have their babies?
transfer them to another home first. theyll open theure eyes after a week
when the mommy and daddy squirrels get it goin on
you will have some new brothers and sisters next spring

  • Do squirrels leave their babies on the ground?

I was mowing a bushy area of my grass and realized that I had mowed right over a bunch of baby rodents in a burrow. (They were not hurt by the mower). I felt bad for disturbing their area so I put a piece of board over the burrow to protect them but then propped one corner so it's mother could get in and out.

    1. do squirrels burrow in the ground like this or are they more likely bunnies? the ears are still shortish so I couldn't tell just based on that. They are brown all over with fur and about the size of a fist.

    2. will my makeshift protection work, or because I mowed the long grass will the mother not come back?

    3. how will I know if the mother is coming to feed them?Do squirrels leave their babies on the ground?
No, they're not squirrels. Squirrels nest in trees and the babies don't come down to the ground until they are almost as big as the adults. That's why you seldom see 'baby' squirrels. They are probably chipmunks or rabbits. They will either stay there or move somewhere else. The mother will not leave them she will care for them.Do squirrels leave their babies on the ground?
sounds as though you have ground squirrels you can pile some long grass on top of the burrow to give them some cover from hawks and the like, for now they should be ok , you can setup a camcorder outside the burrow and let it record for a while , then review it later to see if the mother is returning to feed them .
yea i think theyre on the ground because theyre young so they cant climb...im sure your protection will work for the time being...until she comes to get them...and puts them in a safer place...

    good job...

Do squirrels regect their babies if they've been touched by a human?

i found a squirrel in my basement that is small enought to fit in the palm of my hand and its eyes are fully open so its older then a couple of weeks i bet. i dont know if i should take care of it becuse who knows how long its been in the basement and i dont know if its mother is still around. i really dont want it to die but i dont think i know enough to take care of it without killing it. i saw an older and bigger squirrel outside when i let it go but then i couldnt find it agan to put the baby near it. someone told me that once you touch the squirrel, the mom wont accept it cause it will smell human. im really hoping thats not true so it can reunite with its mother.Do squirrels regect their babies if they've been touched by a human?
ive only seen one squirrel in my whole entire life and it was a baby living in a bird cage(i live in australia, we have no wild squirrels) it wont die from running in circles thats just stupid, squirrels are born in small tree hollows anyway

yes try it,dont bother trying to find its mum since having a different smell on it will tell the mumma that it's been around a predator and mumma will try to get it away so the predator doesnt get her.

this is the same with rabbits(rabbits and squirrrels both come from the lagomorphia family)

dont give it cows milk, they die from lactose

if you dont want it then take it to your vet, where they will decide what to do with itDo squirrels regect their babies if they've been touched by a human?
    sry its gonna die...

if you keep a squirrel in a small place like a little box or chage it will die

because they will keep running in circles till they die.

they were made to run around outesidee

so even if you put like

    food in the cage

itll inorge it and it will run in circles and die :x

Do squirrels have multiple babies or just one?

Squirrels have small litters of 2 to 4 babies on average.Do squirrels have multiple babies or just one?
Eastern Grey Squirrels have litters, twice a year, in spring and again in fall.

I have squirrels in my attic? When do they have babies?

I want to block off the way they got in, but I don't want to trap the babies. Is it safe to wait until the big ones are outside, then fix the holes? Or is this the wrong time of year? I assume they are capable of multiople litters/year. But I'm not sure. ThanksI have squirrels in my attic? When do they have babies?
they usually have babies in the summer and the winter. But the thing with squirrels is that first off the babies stay with mommy for almost a year and when squirrels live in trees they will live in the same tree for there whole life . Thats is assuming the tree stays there their whole life. So when they make a nest they intend for that to always be there home they don't just stay there for a bit then leave. So the babies could be there for a long time or forever. Your best bet is to have either you or and exterminator( not to kill them) put some humane trapps up there. you know the little cages that you put food in.If there is free food there the babies will go in it and then you can be sure they are gone. Or look around well befor you lock it up.

Exactly when do reguler grey squirrels have babies, ';In MO';?

    According to the website: http://answers.google.com/answers/thread…

“Squirrels give birth twice a year, in the spring (January-April) and

in the fall (August-September). There are 2-4 babies per litter. The

babies are self-sustaining at about 12-14 weeks of age and will leave

the natal area in search of their own territory.”Exactly when do reguler grey squirrels have babies, ';In MO';?
    Usually in the springtime.

I remember once on Mother's Day, my mom saw a mother squirrel with her baby in a tree, as if she came down to wish her a ';Happy Mother's Day!'; This had been a squirrel that my mom had been feeding peanuts to for awhile. It was really neat to see she said!Exactly when do reguler grey squirrels have babies, ';In MO';?
Gray squirrels will mate in the late winter or early spring. This mating ritual willing began with a chase, where several males compete for one female. The males will chase each other through the trees jumping from branch to branch. The female will watch and then choose the male she believes is the strongest. That male will follow her until she is ready to mate. After the copulation, the male will return to its territory, leaving the female to raise the litter. The period of gestation varies between 44 and 46 days for gray squirrels. There are normally four to six born in the litter. The female squirrel will nurse the babies for their first ten weeks. During this time the babies will not leave the nest and are completely dependent on their mother for milk.
exactly.... cant be sure of that..

You should be careful feeding cat or dog food, because it is salty. Make sure it has fresh water at all times, anyhow. Try not to handle it too much, because you don't want to get bit or anything. Keep it warm, and in a quarentine for a week, if you are keeping it, it make sure it doesn't die from a disease, and pass it on to anything else.

    Baby squirrel?

Today my hubby found an abandoned baby squirrel that can't be more than 2 1/2 to three weeks old. I have been feeding it what was suggested on a web site, and so far so good. He latched on to the eye dropper with no problems or encouragement from me. Has anyone here hand fed a baby squirrel, if so, did you raise it long enough to set it free, did it reach it's stage of independence?Baby squirrel?
What you really need to do is find a local wildlife rehabilitator. They are in most areas. In some states it is illegal for you to do what you are doing. Crazy, I know! If it is doing well, I say keep doing what you are doing. Get it to a point that it can eat solid food, feed it what it would eat in the wild and then let it go. Just be careful and not handle it too much and not treat it too much like a pet. To find a rehabilitator check this site out. Hope everything works out for the best!

I know they're legally bred to be pets, but different states have different laws. Just make sure you can have one in Texas. As far as where to get one, I have no idea. Sorry. :(

Actually, I never said anything about them being wild animals that shouldn't be kept as pets. I even recognized them being legally bred. Pardon me for not knowing the laws for pet flying squirrels in all 50 states or what you happen to know of them.

Why does the mother squirrel casterate all of her newborn male babies but ONE.?

Wow, this is a new twist on an old urban legend! The usual way the story is told is that male squirrels will castrate each other while fighting. Either way, squirrels do not castrate each other. I've worked as a wildlife rehabilitator for many years, and I have raised dozens if not hundreds of litters of baby squirrels. I have never seen a baby male squirrel castrated by its mother. I think where this story may come from is that when they are very young, baby squirrels need to be stimulated to urinate. (I assume this helps keep them from going just anywhere all over their nest, mucking it up.) Squirrel mothers stimulate their babies to urinate by licking them just above their genitalia, where their bladders are. Maybe someone saw this once, misinterpreted it, and started spreading this story. But I assure you, it isn't true! Why does the mother squirrel casterate all of her newborn male babies but ONE.?
Natural Selection. She only wants the strongest one to reproduce. Why does the mother squirrel casterate all of her newborn male babies but ONE.?
    She's HUNGRY!!
Maybe in captivity they don't do it but maybe out in nature they do....what ever the reason, it's weird. Good question.....you should write to the myth buster guys...

    Do Squirrels eat baby birds??

In my backyard, there is a nest on the ground, its like a burrow, it is covered well with tall grass, a evergreen like tree beside it, branches on the ground and it contains 5 baby birds recently hatched. This morning I heard the mother and father bird chirpped very loudly non stop, I went to see and saw a black squirrel ran off from where the nest is. I was afraid th sqirrel might have ate the baby birds who was just a size of a sunflower. I went to check on the nest is empty except for one baby bird still left, i looked at the baby bird it seems scared and shivering. I stand a few feet back to watch as the mother bird and father bird search around the area where the nest is for the rest of the babies.

So my question is did the black squirrel i just saw, ate the four baby birds???Do Squirrels eat baby birds??
Yes, definitely. Squirrels are common nest predators and can and will eat eggs and baby birds from nests.

Edit: This occurrence is NOT rare as Mikey states..I specialize in nest searching and monitoring and have seen squirrels depredate nests firsthand. There are also MANY scientific papers written specifically about squirrel depredation on nests. Squirrels are opportunistic feeders and are going to eat a nest if they find it. It is not going to sit there deciding how desperate for food it is and decide...';oh, I am not so hungry today..think I will leave these eggs/chicks here';. I believe my own eyes and the research by ornithologists rather than some website that tries to make squirrels look cute.Do Squirrels eat baby birds??
Squirrels do not normally eat meat. They will, when faced with hunger and no other source of food eat bird eggs, insects or pick at a carcass. There are also reports of male squirrels that attempt to eat young animals such as baby squirrels, birds, and rodents. While this is true, it is so rare, it is not mentioned very often. So the squirrel probably didn't eat the baby birds but there is really no way to know for sure.
I don't think so. I just saw a documentary on squirrels and the only time they will eat meat ie other animals such as baby birds is if they are starving.
    yes squirrels can eat birds!
they can but they will not

It is illegal to own a Flying Squirrel in Connecticut.

Further, there are no breeders in the New England Area.

The few breeders that are in the USA will not sell their animals to people who live in other states where it is illegal...so no one will sell you an animal because you live in CT.

How many babies do squirrels have at a time?

how many babies do squirrels usually have at a time? i found 3 baby squirrels with no other squirrels around and i got them in a cage so my cats cant get them im taking them to a plcae called Nature's Nusery tomorrow. i kno what to do with them tho so thx if u can answer that one question. thnxHow many babies do squirrels have at a time?
One thing I have learned, if you are planning on taking care of baby squirrels it's a full time job. You need to feed them formula (baby formula) and they don't go pee on their own so every few hours you'll need to take a warm cloth and rub over their bottom to help them go, if not they'll die within a few days. i know because I was taking care of one and didn't realize until after. They only have a few babies but they make fun pets. We have a squirrel that hangs around our house and will come inside every now and then. Good luck. How many babies do squirrels have at a time?
    4 to 6 I think...Not sure though.

    Usually 4-6 babies.

This is an animal emergency, I need a professional on Squirrels, baby 2-3 weeks old?

In my garage I noticed my cat was constantly searching for something as you can tell, and i come back later to see a baby squirrel hiding inside a black tube shaking with slight blood on his hands. Right now I carefully was able to wash the blood off to free him of some bacteria, but I need tips on how I can help this baby squirrel. he/she isnt suited for the wild and entirely too young right now so I didnt want to leave him/her outside to die. what should I do?This is an animal emergency, I need a professional on Squirrels, baby 2-3 weeks old?
Not to disappoint you but every one I personally ever tried to raise, died.Buy some of the milk for kittens at Walmart or somewhere and go from there..No regular milk..they cannot digest it.If you have a heating pad,try putting this with him to keep him warm, but leave a space for him to get away from the heat if he needs to.Good luck..This is an animal emergency, I need a professional on Squirrels, baby 2-3 weeks old?
you dont HAVE to take it to the vet.

the BEST thing to do is to call your local park ranger,

and see if they will take care of the baby animal.

i have had pet squirrels, and they have all died in

    ';captivity';.

if you really want to help the cute critter,

    call a pro and

have them get the animal to a safer home.

they'll feed him and possibly find a ';foster mother''
Contact the RSPCA who will point you in the right direction.
you should take it the vet now

How often do squirrels have babies - on average how many babies?

also - do they give birth in the nests that they build in the trees or do they move the babies there from somewhere else? How often do squirrels have babies - on average how many babies?
There are many many species of ';squirrels';. To which of them are you referring? Their litter size (and nesting habits) varies widely both within and amoung species. How often do squirrels have babies - on average how many babies?
Typically common red/grey/black squirrels have 2 litters a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. That way they have time to raise the first litter to independence, and then raise the second before hibernation. They raise the babies in their nests, where they are also born. Not too sure on the size of the litters.
They seem to have babies often with litters around 5 to 6
They have litters like kittens. They keep them there in the nest. They don't move them. They have a parent watch the nest, while the other finds nuts and other sources of food.

    Are squirrels baby foxes?

Fox squirrels are slightly larger and more reddish than gray squirrels, with an orange rather than whitish fringe on tail. It can be distinguished from other Kansas members of its family by:

    1) tawny brown to reddish-orange upperparts which are grizzled with gray,

    2) pale rufous or orange underparts,

    3) prominent ears colored ochraceous inside, and 4) tufts behind the ears being fulvous rather than white as in the gray squirrel.

Young are paler than adults, which are alike in both summer and winter. The fox squirrel, and tree squirrels in general, differ from ground squirrels in lacking cheek pouches, and in possessing longer and bushier tails. Are squirrels baby foxes?

Of course, duh. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't think you can measure life in terms of years. I think longevity doesn't necessarily have anything to do with happiness. I mean happiness comes from facing challenges and going out on a limb and taking risks. If you're not willing to take a risk for something you really care about, you might as well be dead.
No, they are completely different animals. A fox is similar to a dog. A squirrel can climb trees and they eat nuts.

My dog cared for squirrel babies!!!!!?

ok when me and my sister were in our backyard we noticed little squirrel babies on the grass so once we examined them 2 out of 5 were alive. so when we put them in a basket to let them sleep my dog ran over and started to nurse them and lick them. I think she thought they were her puppies!!!! Plus how did she nurse them and she's spayed and never had puppies before!!!!!My dog cared for squirrel babies!!!!!?
I would say natural instinct. All animals have it. It sounds so cute, but you really should contact a vet and talk to them about it. Also take the squirrels and your dog into the vet. I think wild animals may have dieases that they can pass on to their babies and other animals. I personally rather be safe than sorry. Good Luck.My dog cared for squirrel babies!!!!!?
AWESOME! Your really lucky! You should probley see a vet, but seriously Good Luck, and my great grandmother used to have a pet squirrel! Maybe you could take them in! But first, see a vet! Good Luck, and Happy New Year!
This isn't uncommon really, I've known dogs to nurse and care for other litters of puppies, kittens, raccoons and other animals. And they can and do produce milk. False pregnancy can (not as common) occur in spayed dogs and lead them to seem and act pregnant or produce milk. One of our dogs began producing milk for an abandoned kitten and nursed her for several weeks until she weened it.
Not sure how that happened with no milk.....I did get an email about a cat that stole a litter of puppies when she lost her kittens. I wish I could show you but I can find the video. The mother of the pups wanted nothing to do with them so the cat took them into a trailer and nursed them.

ADDED!!! I FOUND IT ON YOU TUBE!!! Please watch, its so cute!

some animals have maternal instincts. I was watching a show earlier today that said a dog mothered many animal species. she even raised a calf! as for how your dog nursed them, i have no idea but animals are capable of much more than we give them credit for! ;)
thats really kewl! but u should prob see a vet.
if that happened to my dog I would go ask a vet or something.
your dog has great maternal instincts. i would call or swing by the vet to see how to care for the baby squirrels. good luck.
WOW!! your dog must be really smart. That is a good thing because when she has puppies she will take good care of them. But seriously your dog must be smart.
That is really amazing. just let them keep nursing. I've heard of spayed dogs producing milk before, i think its a motherly thing or something.
She more than likely didnt nurse them... she tried to but not milk came out and the babies sucked anyway trying to get milk. That is really great though that the motherly insitnct takes over like that. If you are going to keep these babies read up on care for them and then bottle feed them... even take them to a vet.

I need all the info i can get about baby squirrels?

yesterday my boyfriend found this thing we originally thought it was a premature puppy but recently found out it is a baby squirrel we know what to feed it how to and how much and how to keep it warm so we basically know how to care for it and all that stuff but any additional info is wanted please and we also want to know if in the state of washington it is legal to keep a squirrel

TURN IT IN TO A WILDLIFE RESCUE OR IT WILL DIE.

Please don't ignore my answer. I regretted ignoring this piece of advice myself. The animal I took in died cuz I didn't know what I was doing. Plus, this is illegal.I need all the info i can get about baby squirrels?
The best thing you can do is to take the baby squirrel back where you found it for the mother squirrel to locate it. Although rabies is uncommon in squirrels, they can carry tetanus, so you should not be handling it. They require feeding every 2-4 hours with specialty formula and staying wrapped in a warm 98.5 degree environment. I found a very helpful site for you...check it out here:
Awww! You should have left it alone because the mother could have came back for it. Or at least that's what happened in my case. It was really cool. I found one in our front yard but my mom wouldn't let me take it inside. So I just kept checking on it. It started making these weird noises. And then the mom crawled down from a tree and picked it up in its mouth.

But anyway, I hope you get info and everything goes well :)
At this tender age, it has NO hope of survival without a mother to care for it. It requires mothers milk!! No, it is not legal to have a wild animal in the state of Washington.

For further advice, call West Sound Wild Life centre on Bainbridge Island.
    Squirrels are vicious

    Squirrels have rabies

    Squirrels taste delicious

    Squirrels are actually evil

And yea.....there's no way you can keep that alive. It probably won't make it sorry.

Cat issues, my Maine Coon cat keeps bringing in baby squirrels! What do i do?

He keeps bringing them in the house dead and alive. What do with him and what do i do with all these squirrels? Moose my cat does not like the expensive Iams cat food i bought him so I replace it with the brand he likes but he is still brought another baby squirrel to my bed this morning. I need some feedback pretty quick. Fed up with him and his squirrel hunting behavior.Cat issues, my Maine Coon cat keeps bringing in baby squirrels! What do i do?
    all cats like to hunt

most cats like junk cat fuhd like Meow Mix

    get a new bell collar and threatin him with it, say ';your going to be wearin this collar if you harm the critters';

remember ...he is just showin you he loves youCat issues, my Maine Coon cat keeps bringing in baby squirrels! What do i do?
He's bring it home as a gift to you because he loves you! It's natural. Keep your cat indoors because lot of cats are being easily killed being outside by maniac cat haters, cars, poison, poisoned rats, etc. Iams and grocery brand foods really suck and they're full of fillers so their companies make big money they don't care about your cat's health. Holistic high quality cat food with no filler and gross meat byproducts will improve your cat's health. Petco sells good food like Wellness, Natural Balance, Innova, Indigo Moon
Bells are usually pretty worthless as cats quickly learn to move without making them jingle. Keep Moose inside and let the squirrels keep their babies.

As for what your cat eats, Iams is definitely not the best. It contains a lot of potentially harmful junk like grains, soy and corn. I'd recommend doing some research and switching to a healthier, more carnivore-appropriate diet.
    If your cat is bringing home Dead and Alive animals he/she is probably thinking of it as a gift for u. It's their way of saying ';Look what I did Mom or Dad! I caught and killed this for u!';

When I had my cat outside she was always hunting and leaving dead animals on my front step lol. I don't think there is anything u can do about it unless you have them inside all the time.

As for the food... hmm... My cat hates the more expensive food. Try MEOW MIX! She loves that!!
Cats don't hunt because they are hungry, they actually enjoy the act of killing, big cats do this as well. Cats are predators and the only way to stop that behavior is to stop letting your cat outside.
His hunting behaviour is natural. Cats are predators by nature. Put a bell on his collar.

Iams is really not that good a food anyway, and I have no idea what that has to do with his hunting?
These are gifts for the cat-God.

You are the bringer of all life to your cat.

I would suggest a bell-collar to make sure the local wildlife have at least a sporting chance.
Stop a cat from hunting - easier to make it stop breathing. And cats don't really care how much you spend on cat food - they have no concept of money. They just know what they like.
Cats (especially pedigreed) need to be kept as indoor only pets. They don't miss being outdoors and the wildlife is safe.

  • How can I take care of two baby squirrels?! PLEASE HELP!?

So the other day, my brother was outside with the dogs, and he hears this awful shrieking sound. One of my dogs was over in the corner by a bush sniffing something.

So he went over there, and this tiny little baby squirrel fell out of its nest or something. It's really young, its eyes aren't even open yet.

So we aren't planning on keeping it or anything, but how can we take care of it until we find some wildlife place to give it to?

Right now, we wrapped it up in a tshirt with its head poking out and put it in a little bird cage. We have a heating pad underneath it so it can warm up.

We fed it water through a little puppy formula bottle, and we also fed it about a CC of watered down puppy formula.

This morning, my mother also found ANOTHER one, hanging from a tree shrieking. There was a storm the other night, so I'm pretty sure the wind just brought something down. How can I take care of two baby squirrels?! PLEASE HELP!?
As for food try giving him/her little pieces of fruits, veggies, mushrooms (not wild), any nuts (without salt) and stuff like that. Here's a site filled with how to take care of baby squirrels. Also try and keep it VERY warm. The T-shirt was a very good idea, but if you have a heater or something try that. But DO NOT let them get close to a heater just so they can feel a warm breeze.

Please read it. And by the way I don't understand why the link says scary squirrel, but it's how to take care of them, recipes, how often to feed them, identifying them and TONS more!

Anyways I hope this helps and good luck! :0)How can I take care of two baby squirrels?! PLEASE HELP!?
Their survival depends on them getting to a wild life centre as quickly as possible. They are less than 10 days old if their eyes are not open. They have very specific food and care requirements that can only be handled by someone with knowledge and experience.

The wild life centre may let you release them into your yard when they have grown to juvenile stage.
my suggestion is to take them to a shelter or wild life refuge. it is nearly impossible to give them care they without proper facilities. for now this website should be helpful.

good luck, i hope they are okay.

    http://www.geocities.com/crawdadcreekreh鈥?/a>
It's iligal to take care of a wild animal without a lisence, my old best freinds mom had a licensce and she had to ask the government before she could take care of an animal. I would jsut give it to the wild animal shelter
If this ever happens again, leave them there. The mother WILL come back for them. Once they smell like humans though, she usually won't. If for some chance she wouldn't save them it would be because she sensed they had severe injuries or brain damage. In that case they are not long for this world. If your dog ever finds something again (say a baby bird), keep him on a leash until the mother has retrieved it.

As for your squirrels, stop giving them water immediately. Baby mammals do not naturally consume water and it can kill them. Call a wildlife center or animal shelter and explain what happened. They can tell you what to do for now. They may even come get them for you. They really will have a better chance if they are treated at a wildlife center.

HELP!!! What do I do with baby squirrels?!?

This morning, I heard this really high-pitched squeaking noise so I went into my backyard to see what it was and saw two baby squirrels!! I thought they might have fallen out of a tree, because they were right under this huge oak tree so I left them, thinking their mom would come get them. I got back from school, and they were still there!!!!! They were just curled up in the freezing cold grass. So I put them in a cardboard box and put a towel in there so they could keep warm, but now what?! The animal rescue place closes at 5:00, so we have to wait until tomorrow to bring them in. What do I do until then? What do I feed them? How do I house them? How do I keep them warm?

They look like they are brand-new babies, they are TINY, and they have really shiny, velvety soft fur. It looks like they just opened their eyes. Every once in a while one of them will do this really high-pitched ';EEEEP!! EEEEP!!!'; sound.

HELP!!! I FEEL SO BAD FOR THEM!!! THEY ARE, LIKE, ON THE VERGE OF DYEING!!!HELP!!! What do I do with baby squirrels?!?
*Must be puppy formula only. Anything else can kill them. If milk comes out there nose, they will die for sure. Must feed with eye dropper real slow and every four hours around the clock. There may be something physically wrong with them. IF the mother knows that for sure they push them out of the nest. This is true with most animals.HELP!!! What do I do with baby squirrels?!?
Leave them where you found them. Its possible the mother will find them. its also possible she threw them from the nest because they aren't healthy enough to survive. If the mother doesn't find them a fox or other predator will have an easy snack. It sounds harsh but your chances of successfully rearing them is very small. If they get eaten their death won't be for nothing.

Keep them warm and in a dark place. If they are old enough to move around on their own put a dish of water in the box. Get them to the rescue centre ASAP in the morning.

I'm assuming that you are in the US. In the UK grey squirrels are not considered indigenous and it is illegal to rehabilitate them and then release them back to the wild. For this reason the RSPCA has to put down any grey squirrels that are taken to them. I used to volunteer for the RSPCA and was always told that if I ever found an injured squirrel I'd be better off trying to nurse it at home where the authorities wouldn't know if I let it go again. Thankfully I've never been in that situation.

I do regularly raise and release wild orphaned ducklings.
you should never touch them, even to feed them, because they are wild animals and might hurt you. You should put them somewher they can get out, like an enclosed box with lots of air holes, just remembet that they COULD get out. and keep them somewhere warm and they should be ok until the animal rescue opens, then let them come get them. Dont try too hard to save them and get hurt, because by puting them in the warm you can help them without getting hurt by playing with the ';cute'; animals. If you didnt find them, they probably would have frozen to death anyway so at least you are helping them
NO BABY FORMULA PLEASE!!! NO GOOD JUST MILK READ THIS!!!!! first off there not going to hurt you they are only babies and at this age they don't even have teeth.they are about 7 week if there eyes are open. second POEPLE duh she said animal control is closed. sorry for people who don't read well. you should take them there in the morning if thats what you want to do( my animal control puts them down right away). but until then the box is fine with the towel. you should put a heating pad in there if you don't have one take a water bottel and fill it with hot water and put it in there but make sure that the towel is between them and what ever you use to warm them so they don't get burnt.keeping them warm is most important next to feeding. do not feed them until they are warm and have been for at least a half hour. now for food take a little cup and put a small amount of milk in it and yogart if you have some( only a small amount and the yogart will help fill them sence they have not eatin in a while) and put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. this will kill the enzymes in the milk so it won't hurt there tummies you can feed them from a syring that is the best thing. you can get them at the drug store in the baby section. please do not use a eye dropper it feeds to fast then the milk gets in there nose and they can asperate( drowned basically) or they get an infection in there nose that can kill them. so please take your time while feeding and go nice and slow. this will get them threw the night. then do whatever you are gonna do. if you have any more questions feel fre to mail me i will be glad to help.

I need to know things about baby squirrels!?

I rescued two baby squirrels who had been abandoned by their mother in my yard. I think they have been outside since last night but I can't be sure. I think they are 3 and a half weeks old. Right now, they are in a cardboard box in our garage (which is very warm) that has blankets, and I put them right next to each other hoping that would help them stay warm. They are covered with the blanket, but not the heads. I fed them some warm whole milk out of a bottle, and they took it. Oh, the box is on top of the freezer in our garage, since its really warm, I figured that would help.

Right now I sent an email to a place that takes baby squirrels, because I figured that they wouldn't be open this late.

Is there anything else I can do?I need to know things about baby squirrels!?
Well you are on the right track. i was going to say you need a heating pad but they top of the fridge should be fine. don't worry about covering their heads the can breath just fine, cover them up just not tight. warmth is the most important thing next to food. If they are uncomfortable they will crawl to where they are OK. With the milk, whole milk is great thats right but instead of just warming it up put it in the microwave for about 45 seconds till it is just before a boil then let it cool down. This is called scalding. The reason for this is that milk has a lot enzymes in it that is to much for their little tummies to handle, scalding it will kill that. If you want put a little bit of plain regular yogurt in it . this is filling and has probiotics that will help with their digestion. Don't listen to anyone telling you to give them kitten formula it is very bad for rodents. It is meant for carnivores which rodents are not. Make sure you do not feed them to fast cause the milk will bubble through their noses and they can get an infection in their lungs and die. If to much gets in their mouth take a tissue and clear their mouth and nose then continue feeding. make sure you are feeding enough and every couple hours take a tissue with warm water on it and tickle their bums to stimulate them to go potty. That should do it. Have fun their great little creatures!!

If you have more questions check out this site, it will tell you everything you need to know.

I need help with two orphaned baby squirrels?

One is a male and keeps having his penis getting really red on the tip, the other is a female and got a rash on her tummy a couple weeks ago and now it looks more like blisters that keep kinda peeling. But the main thing I'm worried about with her is her legs looks like she had been sucking on it or something, both legs have a raw place that looks really bad and makes her walk funny. They are both about 6 wks old as they just opened their eyes last Saturday. Taking them to the vet is out of the option as I don't have ANY money. Thanks in advance!I need help with two orphaned baby squirrels?
Those squirrels are in rough shape and need to be taken to a Wildlife Rehabilitator ASAP.

This will not cost any money, and should have been done as soon as you found the squirrels, as proper care and nutrition are vital to the survival of baby animals of all kind.

Call your local Department of Environmental Conservation for a list of Rehabbers in your area. Some Vets and humane societies/ASPCAs also work with Wildlife Rehabilitators and could direct you to the nearest one.

BTW, they've been sucking on each other, a good sign that they are not getting the proper amounts and adequate nutrition in their feeding. They're starving.I need help with two orphaned baby squirrels?
Seriously take them to a wildlife rehabilitator. They are trained to take care of baby squirrels and will know what to do.

WHY PUPPY FORMULA FOR BABY SQUIRRELS?

Why is it putin most rehabilitaters head to use puppy formula for baby squirrels. This does not make sense to me and i would like to know the logic behind it. Puppies are carnivores so puppy formula is made for a meat eating animal which squirrels are not. Therefore how would there stomachs be ale to digest this? I would like answers from people who have actually gone through some rehab classes or maybe a vet. Can you explain to me what was told to you on why and how this would be a good healthy thing to do. It would seem to me that you would want to give an animal that eats vegetation milk from another animal that eats vegetation not one that eats meat. There digestive systems are not the same.WHY PUPPY FORMULA FOR BABY SQUIRRELS?
I know you want an experts opinion and i'm not an expert but i know EVERYTHINGGG about animals. Female dogs obviously produce milk rich in nutrition for their dogs. Puppies do not get introduced to solids such as meat until they are a few weeks older. So they just need nutrition and the formula is rich in that, they do have different digestive systems but that doesn't mean that their bodies don't need the same nutrients. Such as calcium for bones, vitamins for their fur, and iron. Cows have a different digestive track that us, they are ruminant and have 4 stomachs...yet we still drink their milk. Same with goats and so on.

hope this helpedWHY PUPPY FORMULA FOR BABY SQUIRRELS?
Presumably because you cant get baby squirrel formula.

Help! I found 3 baby squirrels that fell from their nest and it's midnight!?

What do I do with them? I heard squeaking and went outside to see 3 baby squirrels on the ground that had fallen from their nest. There was a cat over them, trying to eat them, so I put them in a box and tied the box on a high branch of the tree they fell from (luckily the cat is inside now). How do I care for them until tomorrow when I will take them to the wildlife rehabilitation center? They have all their fur but their eyes aren't open yet.Help! I found 3 baby squirrels that fell from their nest and it's midnight!?
There mother may find them an carry them off it they are still out side. If their eyes are closed then they are not eating solid food yet. If that is the case they are very young. Keep them on the branch an hopefully their mother will find them an take them. she will pick them up in her mouth such as a cat dose with its kittens. If they aren't taken soon call your local shelter an tell them. They may come out an get them for you.Help! I found 3 baby squirrels that fell from their nest and it's midnight!?
Honestly they would be better off if you try again to find them a safe spot in the tree with the cat inside not watching what you are doing You can use a med to small card board box and double the bottom add some leaves cut a few holes around the top of the box and ron rope through to tie it in the tree when the parents hear the babies cry and know its safe they will care for them Sometimes when you take them to a rehabilitation center they end up food for there birds of prey they are waiting to release back Iam sorry to say this but I have seen it I know its hard but its nature it sucks sometimes

If you want to take on hand feeding just research hand feeding baby squirrels you can make formula your self but thats a big step and not legal to keep them they also carry disease and can be infested with tics and lice I have known some one who raised one and it came to visit him all the time after releasing it
dont leave the box outside, bring it inside away from the cat and give them a towel or blanket, cover the box so they dont get out but so they can breath but there isnt anything you can do till u take them to that wildlife place.. check them tho, if that cat got one of them then you should take them to a vet or somewhere. they could even die over night if they are hurt, so check them like now!!
if you have like goat milk or kitten, or puppy milk you could give it to them from a dropper, but they really are proble soo dehydrated they need Subq IV fluids. Do not touch them much use a towel, or you could but them in the nest to see if mom comes back, but they have a sent on them now. Make sure you keep them warm.
Well sounds fun... really, if they have peach fuzz looking fur (light grey)thier probably to young to make it... If thier fur is normal squirrel lookin but thier eyes aint open yet they may make it...

My sister kind of had the same thing happen last year... and only 1 of the 2 survived... and she raised ginger and when she was a teenager aged squirrel she was returned to the wild....

yeah we're from the southern part of America...

    get'er done....
you should put alot of padding, like towels underneath inside the box so the squirrels wont be cold or frightened and try giving them some nuts of some sort.

and best thing to do is look on google or some internet site they should be able to help.
Take to that shelter. Until then, keep the cat locked up, and supply some food. They might be too young to eat solid food, so get some milk and give it to them.

  • How do you feed baby squirrels?

We just found two newborn squirrels. We don't know if the mother's coming back. But how do we feed them? How do you feed baby squirrels?
This same exact thing happened with two newborn squirrels were in my backyard. One was dying but the other one was very active.

I left some milk mixed with seeds right by them so when woke up they could eat a little.

I kept an eye on them and they ate some of it, but then went of on there own.How do you feed baby squirrels?
To late now. Should not have moved them, any chance the mother will come back for them is gone now. She will abandon the kits on account of your smell even if she did come back. Feed them with a very small bottle such as one you might find in a doll house set. Consult one of the animal activist organizations in your area for details.
Go to the pet store/Grocery Store and buy some wild animal seeds. They will love them as much as an adult squirrel loves nuts! Just make sure you don't touch them (give them your scent) or the mother WON'T come back and who will be to blame?
Go to a pet store and buy some bird feed, sunflower seeds, and apples.

Don't give them the apples whole, just cut them into little, tiny pieces.
Go to walmart and get some wild animal seeds they love it and they can eat it well because that is what mother would have given them.
LEAVE THEM ALONE!! the mother might be fine and have just left them for a while, if you touch them she'll reject them!!!
i would have just left them alone, but now i would say call a vet or an animal shelter or something

Here are a couple of links with baby squirrel info. Maybe they will help with the ';what to do'; and ';what not to do'; stuff.

I recently raised/hand fed orphaned baby mice. I fed them every 2 hours at first then every 3-4 as they got older. I had them for about 5 weeks. They were barely crawling and lightly furred when I found them, also, their eyes opened a day after I found them.

I assume they are like all other animals, needing to eat every few hours. Hope the sites help.

Handle the baby gently, keep him warm but not over warm.

Good luck. How ofter do baby Squirrels need feeding?
sweet. you have all the luck. (they don't but you do) i want to take care of squirrels. where do you live, can i be your girlfriend until they leave? just kidding. well realize this is a once in a lifetime opportunity %26amp; take lots of pictures. also if they told you what to feed them then they should have mentioned how often but i would go with the baby rule of every few hours. babies, even animal babies won't eat if they are not hungry so offer it to them every 2 hours. or google it somehow.
every two hours should do it. you will probably be able to tell when he is hungary. he will be restless, and maybe make little grunting noises.

Good Luck, and thank you for rescueing him, that is so sweet!
Every 3-4 hours would probably be good, but you really should try to get it some special squirrel formula and a bottle. This happened to me before, they are very cute.

    Please answer about baby squirrels?

my husband was at work today and found 3 baby squirrels on the ground. he left them alone for a while to see if the mother would return. she did not. i have tried calling wildlife rehab centers in my area and they are not open. so i have them on top of a heating pad all bundled up. i am feeding them every 2 - 2 and a half hours i started off with powerade to rehydrate them. now i am mixing powerade with puppy formula. they are eating really well. i am trying my best to get them through the night until the wildlife rehab centers open. i have one question that i couldn't find an answer to online. how many times during the night do i need to get up to feed them? is it still every 2 - 2 and a half hours? they appear to be 2 - 3 weeks old. they are not really pink anymore. around their nose is turning into brown fur. they have a LITTLE bit of hair. kinda like peach fuzz. but if you could let me know how many times to get up at night i would soooo greatly appreciate it!Please answer about baby squirrels?
puppy formula is to harsh u need goats milk or kitten milk both can be bought at wal-mart or any feed store dont let the get to hot on the heating pad just keep them wrapped in a blanket should be sufficiant enough...and u will need to poop them ur self just gently rub them with a warm soft cloth. I find kitten milk in the can works best goats milk can make them not go to the bathroomPlease answer about baby squirrels?
I own a Sugar Glider, and they are slightly similar. To check if they are thirsty you can lightly pinch their skin on their neck, and if it goes down they are good, and if it just kind of stays there then give them more powerade, or water. Go on www.glidercentral.net it is a site for sugar gliders, but you can still ask questions about other animals. Someone on there surely can help. Good luck!
take him to a wildlife rehabilitator asap!

I found two baby squirrels at work yesterday. They seem to be just born. They're pink, and...?

the umbilical cord stub is still attached, though it's probably just a scab now. I've been feeding them replacement cat milk a few times a day, and they seem to be doing fine! I really want to raise them, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips/advice to keep them healthy.I found two baby squirrels at work yesterday. They seem to be just born. They're pink, and...?
You need to call your local wildlife rescue organization. Some of them have 24-hour hotlines. They have specially trained people there who can advise you over the phone. If it should become necessary for you to take the squirrels in to them, be sure and make a donation, however small. Most of these organizations are on a very tiny budget and often the workers pay for supplies for the animals out of their own pocket, rather than see them suffer. So make a donation, however small.I found two baby squirrels at work yesterday. They seem to be just born. They're pink, and...?
Look up wildlife rescue on the internet; narrow it down to your area.

I think that it is great that you are trying to save those little guys, but in all honesty, after nursing them back to health, you really should put them back in their natural environment. They will learn, and chances are, if you put them in your back yard they'll probably stay close! I've know many people to do this with rabbits and squirrels. They need to learn to survive in their natural habitat. As for now, call and ask your local conservation department or animal control how to properly care for them until they are old enough to be out on their own. Good luck.
Contact a vet or wildlife rescue organization - they will have the best advice, and they will be able to recommend formula which more closely resembles that of a squirrel. Good luck to you and the little babies!!
It is very ILLEGALto keep wild life like this

    http://www.mary.cc/squirrels/foundababy.鈥?/a>

check out this website for a little more info.

You need to take them to a wild life rehabilitation center right away!!
You will have to get a 1/2 in wire that is used for other pets. And you are doing a kind thing to these lil guys. I have always wanted one, and you will realy enjoy them. You shuld but a cage, agcorns, cage, food, nest box and carefresh bedding. good luck!
Please turn them over to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. These are not pets, they are illegal to posess. They will be dangerous to handle in just a few weeks. they will be able to jump, chew, bite and escape. They will not be able to survive in the wild now that you have taken them from their mother.
Wow, squirrels. The cat milk should be fine till they open eyes and start wandering. Most stores like walmart have squirl food. I am sure that rat food would be okay. Try calling a vet. Pet squirrels are unusual but a vet may have some good advice.

    Found five baby squirrels?

I found five baby squirrels laying on the ground after a sudden storm yesterday afternoon. They were all in a 10ft. radius of each other and were all immobile, ice cold, and their breathing was very shallow.

I brought them inside, dried them off, warmed them up and made them a bed.

I found them right before dark yesterday, so I just now put them back outside for the mother to rescue. I read that after two ours without any rescue attempt, it is safe to assume that the squirrels are orphans.

In all the research I have done, I have read anything about finding this many squirrels at once. My question is, is it possible for all of these precious babies to be from the same mother?Found five baby squirrels?
They probably are from a single mother. Most info that you find will be about a single baby, because usually all the kits won't stumble out of the nest. In this case, the storm probably blew it apart.

This means that the drey (the squirrel's nest) was probably destroyed, so the mother might have no place to take the babies if she does come back for them.

I'd call a local wildlife rehab center (or you could even try a zoo) and ask for advice, and try to find someone that will take the babies if the mother does abandon them.

Good luck, and thank you for being so kind hearted as to rescue them. :)Found five baby squirrels?
take the squirrels to a animal shelter they will take any animal
Yes, they could all be from the same mother. I would give them a little shoe box with some rags and some acorns.
yes it is possible, if you keep them vaccinate them now or ASAP
Ooh keep them!!! im not trying to be greedy but if you take them in they at least have a slim chance of surrvial!!

    What do I do?

Step 1- Keep the baby squirrel warm. This is the most important thing you can do until you find a wildlife rehabilitator or decide what you are going to do. IN THE UNITED STATES, MOST STATES HAVE LAWS AGAINST POSSESSING NATIVE SQUIRRELS FOR PURPOSES OTHER THAN TURNING OVER TO A PROFESSIONAL REHABBER. Keeping the baby warm means the baby needs an external source of heat. Use a hot water bottle or soda bottle filled with hot water. Wrap a towel around the bottle to prevent direct contact with baby squirrel. Lay baby on towel area, then lightly cover baby with piece of towel to prevent any drafts. You don't want to cook the baby, but give a source of heat he/she can cuddle up to. Ideal temperature is 98.5 degrees. There is a lot involved with taking care of a baby squirrel. You have to be able to feed a minimum of every 2 to 4 hours depending on the age. The baby needs the correct formula (no kitten, human baby formula or homemade concoctions or goats milk). Incorrect types of formula can lead to metabolic bone disease and problems with improper development. You need to stimulate the baby after every feeding or urine and stool backup will lead to bacterial build up in the gut and eventual death.

Step 2- The baby squirrel's best chance for survival is with the mother squirrel and if that is not possible, then with a certified wildlife rehabilitator. This is said not to scare you off, but to be realistic. You can locate the nearest wildlife rehabilitator any where in or out of the United States at How To Locate a Wildlife Rehabilitator . If you decide to raise the baby squirrel yourself, the information contained in this manual will enable you to take care of the baby squirrel's basic needs up to releasing. Rabies is uncommon in squirrels, but squirrels can carry tetanus so make sure you are current on the tetanus shot. If you are going to take care of the baby yourself read each section before you act. See First Assessment.

You have found a baby squirrel and you are unsure what to do. Do not attempt to feed the baby until you have checked for injuries and warmed the baby to proper body temperature. First, carefully check the skin for punture marks or cuts. Check the ears and nostrils for blood. Look for broken bones, legs at an awkward angle or hanging, a bone protruding through the skin, or a leg the squirrel is not using properly. If a cat was involved, the baby needs to be on an antibiotic. The preferred antibiotic is Septra庐, available through a veterinarian. The proper dose is .02 of 1 cc syringe (no needle) per ounce of body weight by mouth twice a day for 7 days. Check for dehydration by gently pinching the stomach or loose back skin and if it stays wrinkled for more than 2 seconds, the baby is probably dehydrated. To treat for dehydration and other injuries, see First Treatment.

    Abandoned hungry baby squirrels...?

There are four hungry abandoned baby squirrels on the side of my screen porch gutters, the mom got hit by a car 24hrs. ago, the gutter is long and narrow, the nest is towards the back, the opening is about 10 inches away from the wall, rescuers couldn't get to them unless they took the whole gutter down, to repair it would cost at least 5,000.00 dollars.the alternative they gave me left me distraught, i got on a ladder and gave them some bird seed, but i don't know what else I can do, any advice would be appreciated.....Abandoned hungry baby squirrels...?
Quick, take them to a local vet or SPCA where they have a wildlife rehabilitator. I used to work there. We fed them kitten replacement formula in a bottle.

OOPs, didn't read it thoroughly. Bird seed, they don't eat. If you cannot get them, they will die. If you cannot get them out, they will block your gutter when they decompose, sorry. At some point you will have to get them out.

Do you have anything with a long handle with some type of grasping end? YOu could reach in and try and grab them? God, I don't know. Good luck.Abandoned hungry baby squirrels...?
my friend has had two baby squirrels before. What you should do is put them in a little higher than room tempurature room and feed the warm milk. Put them in a shoe box with some rags or tshirts that you don't need anymore. you want to feed them protien and fat. but liquids. fyi: most cant survive because their mom helps them learn how to walk, and climb. but if you get them shots.... they're yours!
Sounds like they may be too young to eat on their own. I raised baby squirrels after a hurricane and they had to be bottle fed every 3 hrs. I would go about 5 hrs. at night just to get some sleep, but until then it was every 3 hrs. The recipe was newborn human baby formula and egg yolks. Mix according to directions on can, beat in egg yolks, then strain it . Feed the same temp you would a human baby. I wish I was there to help. I'm pretty good at figuring ways to rescue baby's in tight places. Hope it turns out good for the little things.
I know its not a proper answer but aww how sweet of you %26lt;3

  • Raising baby squirrels?

I have 3 baby squirrels I have been bottle feeding for just over 4 weeks. They were around 2 weeks old when they were brought to me. I haven't raised squirrels in a number of years and am trying to remember at about what age they should be taken off formula completely. They are eating some now (shelled nuts, cheerios, oats, etc.) but still rely heavily on their bottle 4 times a day. Right now, they are approximately 6-7 weeks old. I realize I will have them for quite a while still..just trying to remember how old they will be when they wean. Thanks!Raising baby squirrels?
    how cute.

My baby squirrels have little blister like bumps on their stomaches, could this be worms or what? ?

I have had these little guys for about a week now, they have fur but their eyes and ears aren't opened yet. I am feeding them the correct formulas and keeping them warm, but theses little bumps popped up on them that lookes like ant bites, I have put antibiotic ointment on them but they arent getting better, what should I do and what is this?????My baby squirrels have little blister like bumps on their stomaches, could this be worms or what? ?
ya i think they are nipples . the same thing happened to my squirrels i thought they where ant bites so i squeezed on them to try to get the puss out and it just got really red and irritated. i felt terrible after words poor things. but ya i am pretty sure it is just their nipples. if they weren't there when you found them and you have had them inside and safe then nothing should be on them.they have lots of nipples they go all the way from their back legs to their almost their neck.

well if it is not the nipples it may be squirrel pox

    squirrel poxDescription and Distribution

Squirrel pox, or squirrel fibroma is a viral disease which produces multiple tumors on the skin of gray and fox squirrels. It belongs to the pox group of viruses which produce rabbit fibromatosis, rabbit myxomatosis, hare fibromatosis and some deer fibromas. Multiple skin tumors on gray squirrels from Maryland were reported in 1953. Since then, reports of squirrels with skin tumors have come from Florida, New York, Virginia, North Carolina, and Ontario. In Michigan, they have been found on both gray and fox squirrels in the lower peninsula.

    Transmission and Development

These tumors are presumably all caused by a virus. Although the natural history of the virus is not known, both Aedes aegypti and Anopheles quadrimaculatus mosquitoes have transmitted it from squirrel to squirrel in the laboratory. It is probably transmitted by insects in nature as well.

The tumors develop at the site where the insects feed on the animal.

    Clinical Signs and Pathology

Naturally infected squirrels are mostly juveniles. The tumors may be scattered over all the body and range in size from a few mm to 25mm in diameter. Metastasis to the lungs, liver, kidney, and lymph nodes has been reported. In general, there are no obvious signs of illness in naturally infected squirrels except for the presence of the tumors over the skin. In severe cases, when vision is obstructed or the skin becomes secondarily infected, the animal may be less active, weak, and eventually die. The microscopic lesions of squirrel pox virus in the gray squirrel are similar to those reported from Shope's rabbit fibroma virus in the cottontail.

    Diagnosis

The disease is diagnosed by finding characteristic gross and microscopic lesions. Confirmation of the disease is either by histologic examination of tissues for intracytoplasmic viral inclusion bodies or by virus isolation.

    Significance

As far as we know, the virus only infects squirrels in nature. However, in the laboratory it has been successfully transmitted to woodchucks and rabbits.

In Michigan, where squirrel pox is common, there apparently have been no noticeable effects on squirrel populations. The disease is of no public health significance. The carcasses of affected animals are safe for human consumption, since current knowledge indicates the virus is not transmissible to man. Furthermore, the tumors are confined to the skin and are removed when the animal is skinned.

i sent a letter to a friend that has raised over 2500 squirrels to see if there is a treatment wating for an answer. My baby squirrels have little blister like bumps on their stomaches, could this be worms or what? ?
don't be silly, those are probably their nipples. All mammals have them, even cats and dogs, and no, they don't have to be female to have them, males have them too. :)
wow that really cool i never knew you could have a pet squirrels.but if i was you i would take them to the vet befor it gets worse or some things doesn't sound right to me .

    Baby squirrels found?

I found 2 squirrels yesterday in my camper in a pile of socks without their mother and I plan on keeping them (my state allows it) as pets, I feed them half %26amp; half every twice a day.they had a lot of fleas on them but they're gone.

could someone give me some highlights on keeping them as pets?Baby squirrels found?
First off make sure they are kept warm! It needs to be warmer than the touch of our skin. Use a heating pad with fleece or fabric over it so that it does not burn the baby.

Do not feed the baby if its cold

when you do warm them up then start to hydrate them.

You should not start them on milk right away you should hydrate them with something else first!!

They baby wont die within 24 hours without food but will die of dehydration.

It cant digest food without proper hydration

Pedialyte is the best. The babies body will distribute the liquid to the cells that are lacking hydration and then use the rest to aid in digestion.

    Once hydrated introduce

Esbilac Powder Milk Replacer for puppies with heavy whipping cream added

    ';Scientific studies show that Esbilac Powder more closely resembles mother squirrel milk than any homemade formula or other brands.';

Use a 3 cc syringe (no needle of course) and feed like that.

Do not mix it with water.

do not use a baby animal bottle. you can get fluid in the lungs and give them pneumonia and/or drown them

Dont use cows milk or any other product such as Hartz Nursemaid, Mother's Helper, human infant formula, goat's milk, evaporated milk

these products can kill the baby

AS FAR AS CAGING IS CONCERNED.

When they get older you will want to get a tall cage. Something like you would use for a sugar glider.

The taller the better with 3 feet being the shortest you should go!!

I have a 5 ft one for my gliders

Squirrels like to be high (like in trees) so a high cage will be best!

Check out the website I listed below for your information!!!

email me if you have any questions

KITTEN REPLACER MILK IS WAY TO HIGH IN FAT... DO NOT USE IT!Baby squirrels found?
I would definitely check with your local vet, but already you are on the right track with the 1/2 and 1/2. I would suggest finding a hamster or guinea pig cage and maybe lining it with the socks they were already nestled in (if possible). As they get a little older, you'll want to switch them to a higher protein milk product, like 1% cow's milk. Once they can tolerate solid food, start with sunflower seeds or crushed acorns. They are obviously going to want to climb so, if funds allow, I would reccommend buying one of those cat trees, you know with multiple levels. I have one for my kitties and they love it so I could only imagine it would be heaven for squirrels!

Above all, make sure you are ready for the committment of domesticating a naturally wild animal. Potty training is pretty much out of the question, so I would say that you line everything with newspaper for a while. I can't say that training squirells will be easy, but with perseverance and guidance from your vet, I think you have just found two wonderful pets.
First off although it may be leagal for you to keep pet squirrels it is not leagal anywhere to keep wild ones as pets. But if you are going to insist on keeping them here's what you need: 3 cc seryinges, kitten formula (half and half doesn't have the nutrients they need to grow.), If their eyes are still closed you need to feed them more often and you need to stimulate them by rubbing their genitals with a warm damp cotton ball. Try feeding them every two to three hours but do not force them to eat expecially if you can see a large white blob in their stomach. Because that means they are still full. Keep them warm by setting a heating pad on low and covering it with a towl. Set a ten gallon aquarium half on and half off of the heating pad or by a small one made for reptiles(if you use one of these don't wrap it in a towl). They work very well. fold a hand towl in half and put it in the aquarium. Put the babies on top of the towl. They will probably try to get inbetween the layers which is fine. Make sure to handle them frequently otherwise they will bite. When they are older feed them rodent blocks, pecans(the kind that are still in the shell), califlower, carrots, strawberries, and other such veggies and fruits. They love grapes, pecans, apples.
You obviously have no knowledge of keeping them, especially that young. If they were in the camper, it's mother was more than likely to return to them. You should have left them for their mother to return to them. It is not legal without a license to care for such animals for anyone to keep them.

You have more than likely made them sicker by feeding them half and half, you are not supposed to feed them cows milk, for any reason!

The babies require a special formula and anything made for humans is not acceptable.

Here is a website about orphaned squirrels and how to care for them. I suggest you call your local wildlife rehab and give them to them, since you have compromised their home. The babies also need fed a lot more often that what you are doing. You have probably dehydrated them and they may not live because of that.

youd probably do best to keep them similar to rabbits if you really want to keep them

in a big cage with some type of rodent food

make sure you take them to the vet and make sure they dont have any diseases, you can also get advice on the fleas.
just feed them warm kitten milk keep the warm and make sure they have plenty of sleep also make sure they have about 7 feeds a day or take them tom rspca u can also get the dog nappies there really cool they also like sweets and i had some wich i kept in a bin (empty on of corse)
I wish you would allow email so i could have emailed you.

Please stop the half and half immediately unless you want them to die.. who in the world told you to feed them that??

and no way are they 3 months old!!! if their eyes are still closed.. they are under 5 weeks. They start to get hair at about 3 weeks old... it starts to get a bit fuller and more on the tail at about 5 weeks.. and thats right about when the eyes will open.. also depending on whether these are grays or foxers.. grays open their eyes later.. about 7 weeks.

The milk in the half and half will kill them! and their isnt enough nutrients in it.

you need a puppy formula.. its called Esbilac.. get the powdered kind.. and mix one part poweder with 2 parts warm water.. you need to feed them every 4 hours.. but not thru the night. They may still also need a heat source.. do you have heating pad under 1/2 of whatever u are keeping them in? If not.. you need one asap! set the heat pad on low!

give them soft blankets to cuddle in.

and what state are u in that would allow u to keep a wild animal as a pet.. Not that i would ever turn anyone in.. lol.. b/c they just kill the animal.. but its usually not permitted.

also... mom might have just been out getting food.. how long did you leave them alone??

I bet she is looking for them. if you see her out acting all weird.. running around.. you should put the babies back where u found them!

They do not make good pets... they will chew everything in sight! And its very cruel to keep them in a cage.

THey can live for 15 years in captivity... and thats no life for a squirrel.

but for now.. start feeding them right so they can at least live.

PS I have learned the hard way.. that they do not do as well on the liquid esbilac.. if you check the ingredients.. they are VERY different than that of the powder.. so yes.. u will add water to the powder!

also.. if they are dehydrated... from diarreah.. THEN YOU USE PEDIALYTE!........ however.. if they are dehydrated from starvation.......... you use GLUCOSE WATER!

also you cannot use pedialyte alont with the formula.. one cancels out the other.. so if you have to use ped. then you MUST wait at least a couple hours before giving the formula.. with the sugar water.. you dont have to do that!

and yes.. the kitten milk ( KMR) is NOT suitable for baby squirrels..

seee.. it can be very confusing.... its easy to save a squirrel.. but even easier to kill one if you dont know what ur doing..

your best bet is to contact a rehabber! and i think someone sent you great links!

They will grow up to be nasty... they do not make good pets.

their nails are like sharp razor blades! and they play and will run around u like a tornado! They get very territorial of their surroundings... they dont like to be messed with while eating.. their bite can go right to the bone!!!

Trust me.. Ive got in dozens from people who raised them and thought they would keep them as a pet also..
Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.鈥?/a> or here: http://www.wildliferehabber.org/

Licensed wildlife rehabilitators have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals, and they have the required state and federal licenses that allow them to keep the wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released.

Do not take the animal to a vet - vets are for pets, and most vets do not have the expertise to care for wild animals; nor do most vets have the proper licenses that would allow them to keep a recuperating wild animal.

Do not attempt to care for this animal yourself. In almost every state, it is illegal to keep wild animals as pets, and if it is your intention to just care for it until it can be released, most states require people who rehabilitate wildlife for release to be licensed.

鈥淲ildlife rehabilitation licenses or permits are required to work with most native species, since wildlife is a natural resource and considered the property of the collective people of a state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service requires federal rehabilitation permits to work with migratory bird species, marine mammals, and species listed under the Endangered Species Act. With very few exceptions, wildlife agencies require wildlife rehabilitation permits or licenses to rehabilitate wildlife.'; http://www.ewildagain.org/pdf/RecBooklet鈥?/a>

In most states where squirrels are permitted as pets, you can not just take them out of the wild - you need to purchase them from a USDA licensed breeder, or from a store or dealer that got them from a licensed breeder. Check your state requirements again before becoming too attached to these babies. Here is a site that might help: http://www.squirrel-rehab.org/pleaseread鈥?/a>

    Best of luck with them!
